Test Review

Today in class we went over what is going to be on the test, and what we should study for the test. We looked over our notes and talked about the letter to Garcia, Greeks, Socrates, and globalization. The letter to Garcia was written about how Americans have become lazy lazy and when they get a job they pay someone else to do it. This letter was sent to General Garcia but was sent to President McKinley to give to General Garcia. We also talked about Greeks and their lifestyles and inventions. The Greeks invented many things like democracy, theater, philosophy, poetry, the Olympics, and much more. In the year 508 BC the Greeks overthrew there government. Another big topic is Socrates. Socrates was a powerful philosopher who made people think in a different way by asking why. His big quote was "the examined life is not worth living." Socrates died a very painful death but he took his death like a man and died with pride. He was charged with corrupting the youth of Athens and disrespecting the gods. Globalization is the interconnection of different parts of the world. It results in the expansion of international, cultural, economic, and political activities.

Sweat Shop Discussions

Today in class we discussed our thoughts and highlights on the video we watched yesterday. My thoughts on the video is that it's completely wrong to have a sweat shop, no matter where it is, or what company it is. Making poor people spend all day living off under wadge payments is cruel and not right. These poor people don't deserve any of this. It's so unfair and one of the worst things we as humans can do. We have the choice to give them higher pay but multi-millionaire companies like Nike decide to give them less pay just because they can.

Behind The Swoosh

Today in class we watched a video about Jim Keady the founder and co-directer of Educating for Justice. Jim studied theology at St. Johns and coached for a professional team. When the team was offered to be sponsored by Nike, Jim being the strong willed catholic refused to support and wear Nike apparel and was fired from his job. He went to Tangarang Indonesia with the co-founder of Educating for Justice, Leslie Kretzu. They lived off the under paid wadges of Indonesians working in Nike's sweat shops. They lived in a 9x9 cement box with no windows, air conditioning, two thin mats to sleep on, and just enough food to get through the day.

Globalization Power Point

Today in class we worked on a new project. We used Google drive again but this time used a power point instead of word. We wrote about the pro's and con's about globalization. Some of the pro's are that with globalization there is more communication between countries. Also corporations and governments are trying to figure out ecological problems for each other.
Some of the cons are that millions of Americans have lost jobs to imports and and production
shifts due to globalization. Also service and office jobs are increasingly vulnerable to offshore jobs and workers are giving pay-cuts and often threaten to trade jobs.

Infrastructure

Today in class we talked about infrastructure. Infrastructure is the basic physical and organizational structures and facilities needed for the operation of a society or enterprise. We also learned the the United States puts a lot of money into the united nations head quarters in New York. The united nations doesn't always solve all problems but it is still a big help in the world. We also talked about how our movie making facilities make more money then any exporting business in the world. This is because movies come out all around the world.

Globalization

Today in class we discussed the tragedy on 9/11/01. We talked about how that day most likely the most torturous event that  has ever happened in the united states. The united states has never been through such a sad phenomenon like 9/11 before. So many lives were lost yet so many were saved by our heroic team of fire fighters, police men, and even pedestrians. No one knows why this attack was on us or how the plains got hijacked. But, we do know that it took a lot of courage and  time to find the "master-mind" of the attack and kill him as the penalty he deserved.

We also talked about globalization. Globalization is the interconnection of different parts of the world. It results in the expansion  of international, cultural, economic, and political activities. We looked at a picture of a KCF and McDonald's in Japan. We talked about how the fast food restaurants put in Japan have lowered the life expectancy and changed many family meal traditions.

Human Geo Test Questions

Today in class we worked on the human geo test questions on Google drive. Google drive is really interesting because it's almost like a group chat except you can delete what other people type. It took a while for us to settle down and get used to it but we ended up with 11 good questions with the addition of Mr. Shcick's test questions to summarize Socrates philosophy.

Human Geo Video

Today in class we watched a video on the population of the U.S.A, China, and India. It also showed that the worlds technology rate is increasing immensely every day. Some specific things that stood out to me in the video was how the growth rate of Chinese children is very low because you are only aloud to have one child in China. I also found it very interesting, not as surprising, but how large the year rate was for 50 million people to purchase a radio and the current technology. The third thing that stood out to me in the video was how big China is compared to the U.S.A.

Socrates

Today in class we discussed the life, death, and philosophy of Socrates with the addition of Steven teaching the class. We learned that Socrates was actually a very strange looking man with big flared nostrils, bug eyes, and raged clothes. We also listened to a story about how Socrates was drunk at a party and reasoned that he was a good looking man because he had functioning features that were bigger then usual so they could be used for a deeper and better purpose. Socrates philosophy of thinking was considered a threat to others because he made people think in a harder and different way asking the simple word why. He was sentenced to death by poison for the charges of corrupting the youth of Athens and disrespecting the gods. He was on a trial of about 500 Athenians and voted to be put to death. Even though he had a few opportunities to be released of his sentence, he refused and died with pride.

Ancient Greece

Today in class we learned about some of the things ancient Greece has invented. We also "discussed" the definitions we defined for homework. Just a few of the things Greece has created is theater, pottery, democracy, and philosophy. There are many other things that the Greeks have invented. We also were told to look up who Socrates was. I found out that Socrates was born 469 BC and died 399 BC. He also had a wife named Xanthippe and three kids; Menexenus, Lamprocles, and Sophroniscus. Socrates was a classical Greek Athenian philosopher and also was one of the founders of Western philosophy. The Socrates method is a form of discussions between individuals based on asking and answering questions to show critical thinking.
